Why VINs Matter

Why VINs Matter
We’d like to shed light on a crucial aspect of motorcycle ownership and operation – the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and why it’s important. Whether you ride a traditional gasoline-powered motorcycle, an e-bike, moped or have entered into the exciting new world of electric mobility, VINs play a pivotal role in ensuring DOT/SAE compliance, registration, safety, insurance and addressing recalls.

1. DOT Compliance and Registration:

VINs serve as a unique identifier for every motorcycle and motor vehicles/trailers on the road. This alphanumeric code is much more than just a combination of letters and numbers; it holds the key to your bike’s legal status, what time of vehicle it is and everything you need to identify all things related to your bike/vehicle.

When it comes to DOT compliance and registration, the VIN is your passport to legally hit the road. BUT not all bikes (especially in the e-bike, e-moped and electric motorcycle world) come VIN equipped. And some are tailoring their “serial” numbers to come off as “VINS”. This is not only illegal, but unsafe.

Adhering to DOT/SAE compliance and local laws is not merely about avoiding fines; it’s about your safety and that of others on the road. Compliant motorcycles meet safety standards, ensuring that essential components like brakes, lights, and tires are in optimal condition. Riding a non-compliant bike in traffic not only jeopardizes your safety but can lead to serious legal consequences.

2. E-Bikes vs. Electric Motorcycles

Many e-bikes are being ridden like electric motorcycles – cruising at speeds close to 30mph (and in some cases they are hacked to go upwards of 55mph). E-bikes are built to be ridden on bike paths and ridden at lower speeds, but more and more, cities and towns are seeing e-bikes ridden on city and county roads. This not only endangers the rider, but also impedes traffic and falters the flow of traffic.

E-bikes are not delivered with VINs and may not have been subject to the same rigorous testing and regulations of vehicles equipped w/ VIN numbers, potentially compromising their safety and reliability, as well as making it impossible to get insured for on-road use. The presence of a VIN indicates that the motor vehicle has been manufactured to meet specific safety and quality standards set by regulatory bodies. Furthermore, in the event of theft or accidents, a VIN provides a traceable record, ensuring accountability and aiding in recovery.

3. Safety and Recalls:

VINs enable manufacturers and authorities to track your motorcycle’s production and performance history. In the unfortunate event of a safety-related recall, your VIN is the linchpin to notifying you about potential issues and ensuring your motorcycle receives necessary repairs or upgrades.

Safety recalls are not uncommon in the motorcycle and moped industry. Ignoring recall notices due to non-compliance or an incorrect VIN registration can put your life at risk. It’s imperative to act promptly when you receive a recall notice, as these issues could impact crucial safety components.

4. VINS and Insurance

Electric everything is on the rise, offering a greener and quieter alternative to traditional gasoline-powered modes of transportation, and one of the reasons e-mobility is on the rise is because of the torque and speeds that these bikes, motorcycles, mopeds and cars can reach, quickly. It’s no surprise that insurance companies want and need compliance to insure the rider and their vehicle. VIN numbers ensure this, and allow you to insure your VIN-equipped bike easily and effortlessly.

In Conclusion:

We encourage you to take a moment to double-check your motorcycle’s VIN and ensure it aligns with your registration and compliance requirements. By doing so, you’ll be contributing to a safer and more responsible riding community. And please, by all means insure your motorcycle!
